With the estimated inventory for 2008/2009 at 208 facilities totaling 2,493,522 square feet, the Maintenance Division’s daily requirements are a challenge. The facilities vary in size, age, type of construction and usage. A number of the County’s buildings function as customer oriented service facilities, however there are numerous special purpose facilities, such as the Sheriff’s Administrative and correctional facilities, fire departments, emergency management sites, and community centers. The correctional facilities continue to be the most challenging environment for the division. With an average daily population of 1,600 inmates, these facilities are subjected to the most abuse of any other building in the County’s inventory. Adding to the effort required to maintain these types of facilities are the time consuming security procedures and measures essential to the incarceration of the inmate population, as well as the safety and well being of both correctional and maintenance staff.
The cyclical preventative maintenance and controlled facilities inspections continue to be the mainstay of the division. A computerized maintenance management system delivers on demand reports for scheduling and tracking all preventive maintenance and repair activities under the responsibility for the Board of County Commissioners. This system also allows the division to accurately report labor and material expenditures and to identify inefficiencies within a particular facility. A comprehensive database is continually maintained on all infra-structure type mechanisms associated with all facilities.
A variety of requests are received through customer generated service calls, work request submissions, and after hour emergency dispatch notifications on a daily basis. The division is fortunate to have the experience and expertise to respond to any request, as well as provide extensive facility and infra-structure systems inspections, develop scopes of work to initiate contractual projects, and enforce and oversee warranty work.
All personnel assigned to this division are designated “Emergency Critical or Emergency Essential” and play a critical role in the County’s disaster preparedness program.
