After School Program Supports Academic Growth
The Escambia County After School Program made a transition from the traditional after school program format, where recreation and homework assistance played a huge role, to continued learning focusing on homework assistance, reading circles, math remediation and project-based learning. With this format, more value is placed on supporting youth with academic achievement while reinforcing what is being taught in the Escambia County School District.
Although homework assistance remains a priority, the program places great emphasis on math and reading remediation. The program partners with the Escambia County School District to ensure that program participants have the necessary tools needed to encourage academic growth and improvement. The Escambia County Information Technology Department provided Chromebooks to students to assist with educational success. Additional Chromebooks were purchased by NHS and West Florida Public Libraries.
