Mission Statement

The Division of Public Social Services/Community Resource Centers strives to enhance the quality of life for the citizens of Escambia County; this is accomplished through the provision of a variety of community-based programs and initiatives that encourage youth participation that increase learning.  

• Brownsville Community Center
  • The first, PLAY-LEARN-GROW Afterschool Program was hosted with an average attendance of sixteen daily youth participants
  • Employability Skills Training Workshops were held at Brownsville Community Center in partnership with Goodwill Easter Seals of the Gulf Coast and Pensacola Young Professionals - hosting eight workshops.
  • Employment/Job Search Computer Access held at Brownsville Community Center servicing job seekers.

• Wedgewood Community Center
  • Employability Skills Workshops were held at the Marie K. Young Wedgewood Community Center in partnership with Goodwill Easter Seals of the Gulf Coast – hosting (5) workshops
  • Marie K. Young/Wedgewood Community Center hosted the 2^nd Play Learn Grow Afterschool Program with a daily average of (21) youth participants
  • Marie K. Young Wedgewood Community Center was the host site for the 3^rd Annual Play Learn Grow Summer Camp.The summer camp had a daily average of 109 participants with 6,009 meals served to the youth as this was a summer feeding site.The Escambia County Play Learn Grow Summer Program provided summer camp programming focusing on educational, social and recreational enrichment for school age youth residing in Escambia County.The program provides quality programs in a safe structured environment that stimulate and encourage youth to continue their learning in a fun, engaging manner throughout the summer months.

• Ebonwood Community Center
  • Ebonwood’s newest program – the Ebonwood Community Center Senior Program offers activities for seniors, which includes arts and crafts, creative writing and book discussions. The program also host health care programs, community outreach programs and fitness classes.
  • Play Learn Grow Afterschool Program- “The Youth Connection” hosted at Ebonwood Community Center in partnership with Community Drug and Alcohol Council, Inc., GSI Recycling providing snacks and program materials, and the Ebonwood Homeowner & Neighborhood Watch Community Inc., which also provided snacks and program materials servicing youth with a daily average of 36 participants.
  • The summer program at Ebonwood Community Center host site in partnership with Community Drug and Alcohol, Oakcrest Elementary School providing the cafeteria and playground area, GSI Recycling providing snacks and program materials, and the Ebonwood Homeowner & Neighborhood Watch Community Inc., also providing snacks and program materials, accommodating over 200 youth for the summer and providing a total of 5,434 meals as Ebonwood was a summer feeding site.
• Dorrie Miller Community Center
  • The Extra Mile/Club Str8–Up hosted Afterschool/Teen Programs at Dorrie Miller Community Center servicing youth with a daily average of 18 youth participants.
  • The Extra Mile Teen Job Fair was held at Dorrie Miller Community Center in May with 50-75 youth in attendance. Fifteen teens were reported being hired or made job offers.

• Aid to Outside Organizations
  • Through the Human Services and Appropriations Committee and in collaboration with the United way of Escambia County, the commission allocated $90,725 toward aid to private organizations.
